Report of Annual Meeting of the WI - 28th May 2008
Congratulations to resident Ida Pollock, who celebrated her 100th birthday last April.  Her daughter Rosemary tells us the day
began with delivery of a birthday card from the Queen, followed  the arrival of numerous friends and family members bearing gifts and
flowers.  Ida is a novelist of many years standing, and was particularly pleased to receive congratulations from the Romantic
Novelists' Association, and several publishers including Mills and Boon, also celebrating theit centenary this year.
Ida was born in Kent on April 12th 1908. From the age of ten she wanted to be a writer, and by the time she was nineteen several
of her stories had been printed in major magazines. Early in the war she took a job in London, where she remained through much
of the Blitz. In 1942 Ida was present when her mother's Sussex  home was devastated by a German bomb, but she was not seriously
injured.  In 1943 she married Hugh Pollock, a soldier and publisher who had previously been the husband of children's writer
Enid Blyton. After the war Ida started writing again, rapidly acquiring five publishers, ten pen-names and a million readers
worldwide. With their daughter Rosemary and various dogs Ida and Hugh spent time in Switzerland, Italy, France, Ireland and
Malta, as well as many different parts of  England. In 1971 Hugh died in Malta, where he is buried in Mtarfa's British military cemetery.
Ida returned to England, spending several years in Wiltshire before moving to Lanreath in 1986.
The author of over 100 published novels, many of them historical romances, Ida is also an accomplished artist and in 2004 one of
her paintings was selected for inclusion in an exhibition devoted to 'the best of contemporary [traditional style] British art'
(this exhibition was staged at the Mall Galleries in London). She has also constructed a number of model houses. Ida's long
awaited autobiography, 'Starlight', is to be published during the summer of 2008, and around the same time two favourite novels,
'Sea Change' and 'A Distant Drum', will be re-issued by House of Stratus.
100 years young!!

A very busy evening ahead of us tonight. We began with many thanks to John for providing us with copies of the group
photograph. There was also appreciation for all who worked so hard and provided so much towards the success of the May Day
catering. This event was also a financial success for us and as a result we were able to donate £50 to the Amenities group.
Those who attended the County Chairman's coffee morning at St Ewe also managed to fit in lunch at Charlestown, a visit to
Wyevale Garden centre, and finished off by collecting supplies for the Community Shop Walk and Cream tea event.
For the first time in ages we are taking part in one of the W.I. competitions at the Royal Cornwall Show. There has been much
deliberation over the items necessary to complete our picnic "suitable for Ladies Day at Ascot".The final selection was made at
Lila's so fingers crossed for the entry.
Now on to the Resolutions. Much discussion, many points of view, some new ideas, many doubts and personal experiences
shared.  The resolution about banning unlawful imprisonment of severely mentally ill individuals was simpler for us to reach a
unanimous decision supporting it, than the ban on bottom trawling. So many pros and cons left us divided. Our Delegate Janet,
listened attentively to the thought provoking discussion on both resolutions and no doubt kept these in mind when voting at
Liverpool.
Little time left of our meeting, but while trying to decipher Rita's fiendish quiz we enjoyed our usual appetising fare provided by
Bridget and Sue M.
Flower of the month winners were 1st Sandra, 2nd= Janet and Irene 3rd Bridget.
Our next meeting is on 25th June and the competition is....three Eccles cakes.
Lanreath first eleven will be holding a football match on Sunday 13th July against Plymouth Argyle Vets (Veterans). The day will
start with a car boot sale starting at 10.00am followed by the match at 14.30 pm. Argyle's team will include 7 of  their 1984 F.A. Cup semi
final team including Tommy Tynan, Chris Harrison, Andy Rogers, John Uzzell, Leigh Cooper, Gordon Nesbit and Dave Phillips.
The match will be followed with an auction of football memorabilia conducted by Peter Hooper of Kivells, all the proceeds will be
shared with Ellie's Haven and Lanreath F.C.
The amenities group have volunteered for car parking duties and the W.I. will be doing teas, etc.
If you are in the vicinity of Lanreath that day, we would be delighted to see you.  Our ground is at the northen end of the village,
next to the village hall.
